RUGBY IN WALES
REMARKABLE PLAYER The most remarkable figure in Welsh Rugby during the past season, from many points of view, was Ivor Jonas, the Llanelly forward. He got his first International cap against England in 1924, and played first-class football at Least two years before that. In his prime, colonial teams acclaimed him as the best forward in Great Britain, says the Manchester Guardian, and he certainly had qualities which merited that descrption. His remarkable staying power is proved by the fact that he retained his place in the Llanelly side last winter by sheer merit; in faot, he would have retired but for presure put upon him by the committee.
Famous players whose names are now numbered with almost forgotten veterans —J. Basset, R. Harding, A. Jenkins, Dela.hay and Cornish—were his contemporaries, and men who are now in the veteran stage, I. Rees and E. C. Davey, were playing secondary school football when Ivor was already famous. Taken all round, he is one of the most remarkab’e figures :in !f!he history of the game in Wales. Jones visited New -7.fr’and with the 1920 British team.
