INTERMEDIATE SCHOOL BUILDING WELL FORWARD COMPLETION THIS YEAR Good progress is being made with the construction of the Intermediate School, which is being erected near .he Oval. It is the largest building contract m progress in Gisborne at present, and by the time the building and c.ne grounds are completed the cost is expected to reach about £40,000. li is also the largest intermediate school being erected in New Zealand at present. The building comprises two wings each more than 200 ft long, these being joined by the central portion which contains the assembly hail, this section being over 200 ft wide. In addition, there is a manual training block at the rear. The work has been going on for about six months now, and everything should be completed by the end of the year, ready for occupation at the • commencement of the new school year. The major portion of the structure is roofed in, and the roofing of all sections should be completed by the end of the week. Special Sound Boards An innovation, just recently approved, is the installation of loud’ speakers in every room, and special installations of sound boards are proceeding. The latest types Of materials and methods of construction are being used by the contractor, Mr. George Smith, who is pushing work ahead at a rapid rate. Much of the exterior work has btm completed, most of the effort now required being in regard to the interior wails and detail jobs. The 120 doors of the open-air type have been made in the contractor's factory, and a suitable opportunity for their fitting is being awaited.

The northern side of the building has been prepared for the fitting of the steeltex boards and plaster. The wall has been made watertight beneath the wooden frame, and the plaster coating should give the front an attractive appearance. Approximately 70,000 sq ft of wall board is being used to line the interior. The work has reached the stage when the contractor will be able to commence placing the wall board in position, there being 50,000 sq ft fo r the upper portions of the walls and nearly 20,000 sq ft lor the lower sections. Large Assembly Hall A big assembly hall, GSft in length and 40ft in width, will be one of the features of the main section of the school. At one end of the hall will be a spacious stage and ante rooms, while teachers quarters also will be in this part of the school. Good progress also is being made with the construction of the manual training centre at the rear of the main building, and preparations are being made to complete the roofing. This building will contain a model fiat, in addition to otner rooms for cooking, needlework and woodwork. The quadrangle is to be entirely ebnereted. This is the area enclosed by the two wings, in which the class-rooms-will be situated, and the northern section, with the manual training centre at the. rear. The manual building is connected with the main structure with a concrete path, which is to be roofed in, and the corridors are so arranged that teachers and pupils may walk to and from any portion Of the school and to the manual building without going out into the open. Ground Improvements

In adidtion to the concreting of the quadrangle, a concrete assembly area will be laid down on the northern frontage. Work not in the main contract is the levelling of the grounds in the playing area, and this is a job which is to be put in hand shortly. Advice was received to-day from Mr. D. W. Coleman, M.P., that the Cabinet had approved of a grant for ground improvements.
