Queen Mary’s remarkable knowledge of the Royal art collections is far from limited to the 6000 pictures that hang in Buckingham Palace. She knows the paintings at the King’s other residences, from Windsor Castle to Balmoral, equally well. The other day she solved the mystery of a canine portrait for Mr. Roy Bishop, an expert who lias had permission to study Royal collections.

This painting, which hangs in the drawing-room at Balmoral, shows what lie thought to be a pug, standing on a breakfast table, gazing into a top hat. Its absurdity struck him. Queen Mary told him that it was a peke, not a pug, and Queen Victoria’s favourite dog.
