Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Bantram, East Coast, were the guests last week of Mr. and Mrs. T. Utting, Harofiga road.
Mr. J. 'Newman, manager of Newman’s 'Motors, iNelson, was a recent guest of Mr. and Mrs. 11. C. Newman, “Fairfield,” Ormoni.
Mr. R. A. Martin, branch manager of the industrial department of the A'.M.P. Society, who has been visiting Gisb'orne, left for Whakatane today.
Captain Reginald Wallis, who has been in hospital in Dunedin for the past month, has recovered and will leave for Auckland this week, en route to England. Out of 26 applications, Miss E. M. Holmes, senior assistant at the Hamilton Public Library, has been appointed librarian ait the Carnegie Public Library, Dannevirke. Sir James Hutchison, editor of The Otago Daily Times, and Lady Hutchison, who are returning from n visit to England, are passengers on the Wanganella, iwhich is due at Wellington from Sydney to-day. Mr. T. Utting, Haronga road, le»ft on Monday for Wellington to join the s.s. Wanganella, which leaves on Thursday for Sydney. From Sydney ;he is going to Brisbane, and expects to return to Gisborne in about six •weeks.
Captain W. R. K. Morrison, late of the Otago Regiment, left Auckland yesterday for Sydney to take up a six months' course at Duntroon Military College. He will then return to take up an appointment with the New Zealand Staff Corps. Mr. G. 11. Cain, of the staff of the Sudan United Mission, has arrived at Auckland to spend a holiday in New Zealand. Mr. Cain was formerly associated with mission work in Abyssinia until about two years ago, when he was forced to leave the country and work in the Upper Sudan. The Gisborne firm of Messrs. Henry Martin, Limited, . cordial manufacturers, has appointed as 'its managing director, Mr. J. A. Bell, for many years well known in Palmerston North, and for 16 years factory manager of Messrs. J. M. Carson, Limited, in the Manawatu centre. Mr. Bell has a previous connection with Gisborne, having visited this district several times While holding the office of area sergeantmajor and musketry instructor for the Wellington-East Coast district, during the Great War. He has served as an executive member of the Manawatu Automobile Association, and has been deeply interested in Royal Arch Freemasonry and Rotary Club work. Among his varied interests has been also the breeding of show canaries, with which he has won a number of championships, Mr. Bell will take over his duties in Gisborne to-morrow.
