FORESHORE DRIVE

CENTENNIAL PROJECT STANLEY ROAD TO RIVER MAORI OWNERS CONSULTED The project of extending the Waikanae foreshore improvements westward from .Stanley road to the Waipaoa 'River, in order to form the basis of a centennial drive scheme, was taken up with '.Maori owners of the Paokahu block during the weekend, when. Messrs. ,1. Chrisp and A. J. Cox, on behalf of the Gisborne Thirty Thousand Club, visited Manutuke and discussed the plan with a number of those interested in the land, reports the ‘Herald’s Manutuke correspondent. Most of the owners of the block reside at Manutuke, and the deputation from the Thirty Thousand Club was able to meet a number of them. It was pointed out that for the present it was desired to secure the right to plant ornamental trees, such as Norfolk pines and pohutuka'wa,' as a basis for a scheme of further development later. The ultimate object was to create a drive along the foreshore, within two chains of high water, and the first step was to secure a flourishing growth of trees and shrubs.

"We may never see the beauty of the trees ourselves in their full growth, but we will be leaving something of beauty for our children r.nd your children,” said Mr. Chrisp.

Some of the Maori owners already have signified their willingness to cooperate with the 'club, realising that the formation of the road and planting of trees would tend to make the locality much more .attractive avid accessible, and also might promote the value of the remaining land for purposes of a summer camping ground, offering quietness and privacy as-well as excellent bathing conditions. Others among the owners offered certain stipulations as a condition of their assent to the scheme. It is proposed to hold a further, and ills hoped a final, meeting during the month, when all those with interests in the area will be present or represented.
