CARVED MAORI FIGURE

Believed :to have been one of the corner posts of the old fortified village of Omarunui, .a carved figure of a Maori woman, estimated to be at least 150 years old has been loaned to the Hawke's Bay Museum and Art 'Gallery by Mr. W. Georgctti, of “Criissoge,” in whose possession it ‘•lras been for many years. The figure is of solid wood, stands 7ft. high, and ■the face is fully tattooed, indicating that it is a, representation of a woman of high degree. Carved- around the neck of the figure is a cord, from which are Ismspendedi two small ornaments.
