Prior to the annual dance held by the Rere Sheep Dog Trial Club on Saturday night, several jolly dinner parties were arranged by residents of the district, some of the hostesses including Mrs. L. Cooper, Mrs. G. C. Fnlkner and Mrs. A. J. Harris.

Miss Estelle Hamilton, of the stafT of the Masterton Hospital, who has been visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs; H. P. Hamilton, Upper Stout street, left yesterday by air for Masterton, where she will be the guest of Mrs. Rummer for a few days before returning to duty.

Mrs. Duncan Simpson, Marton, was one of the, five New Zealanders representing the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union at the recent conference of the Associated Country Women of the World. The others were Miss M. Taylor, Marton, Mrs. Pye, Taihape, Mrs. Mills, Nelson, and MLss Jamieson, who now resides in England. “Kitchen” Party

Prior to her marriage to Mr. T. Warrington, Miss E. Johnston was the chief guest at a most enjoyable "kitohen,” evening given by Mrs. Shields.

Monopoly and flag five-hundred were arranged for the entertainment of the guests in the sitting-room, which looked inviting with its decorations of early spring blooms. After supper, the parcels, containing a varied assortment of useful kitchen Utensils, were opened by the bride-to-be, who acknowledged the gifts in a very happy manner. Jolly Dinner Party

A small, charmingly arranged dinner party was given by Mrs. E. M Monckton at her home at Ngatapn on Saturday night -for her son. Mr Christopher Monckton, the guests later attending the annual sheep dog. trial dance at Rere.

Daphne and violets filled the draw-ing-room with fragrance, and a large fire offered a cheery welcome. Dinner was served in the dining-room, a bowl of .pastel-tinted flowers being used with artistic effect in the decoration o.f the table. The hostess looked smart in a dinner frock of uncrushable linen printed in blue, petunia and green tonings. The guests included Misses J. Perry, N. Broadhurst, and P. Murphy, and Messrs. T. Williams (Muriwai), and G. Spears.

Informal Dinner Party The very jolly buffet dinner party given by Mrs. R. G. Dobson at her home at Rere on Saturday night provided a pleasant prelude to tne annual dance held by the Rere Sheep Dog Trial Club.

Mauve (lowers, delicately blended greenery and richly-tinted autumn foliage were artistically combined in the decorations of the drawing-room, and in the dining-room lovely violets shed' their fragrance upon the charm-ingly-arranged table.

Among the guests were Mr. and Mrs. H. E. Cave, Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Gardner, Mr. and Mrs. W. L. Irwin, Mr. and Mrs. G. Law, Misses E. Thomas, M. Blair. E. Hegarty, and P. Barker; Messrs. G. Gregory, D. Lawford (Auckland), G. Baker, and Alberts. United Services Club Ball

Even the most beautiful gowns worn by the women who attended the annual ball of the United Services Club, Wellington, on Friday night, seemed to pale beside the splendid scarlet, blue and gold of the army, navy and air force uniforms worn by the men. The Governor-General Viscount Galway, and Lady Galway honoured the function by their presence.

Attending Lord and Lady Galway were Major R. G. Byron and Mrs. Byron, Captain Lord Dormer, Lieutenant R. S. le 11. Lombard-Hobson, and Mr. D. E. Fouhy.

Lady Gakvay looked charming in a smart pink moss crepe suede gown worn with diamond clips, bracelets and circlet.

Lieut.-Colonel F. M. Spencer, pres.dent of the club, and Mrs. Spencer, who were host and hostess, received Their Excellencies. Mrs. Spencer wore a handsome old gold gown of heavy, patterned taffeta, and a circlet of gold sequins.

The gathering was a brilliant one, and there were more than 500 dancers present.

The decorations were reminiscent of a woodland, for greenery was arranged in cool tracery overhead, and ferns, wattle and other greenery, and Iceland poppies were arranged in patterns around the walls. The orchestral stage was gay with Iceland poppies. Coming-of-age Celebrated

Messrs. Findlays’ reception rooms were the scene of a delightful party on Saturday .night, when Mr. and Mrs. J. Crothers entertained a large number of friends in celebration of the coming-of-age of their second son, Mr. Alex Crothers.

The host and hostess welcomed the guests, the latter wearing a smart frock of black cloque accented with a shoulder spray of flowers in delicate shades of pink.

Dancing to music supplied by Mr. A. Pilkington was entered into with keen enthusiasm, the floor toeing efficiently supervised Iby Mr. J. Turtoitt. A feature of the beautifully-deco-rated supper-tables was the handsome birthday cake representative of a hockey field complete with players.

Mr. J. Miller acted as ctoairman, and tlie following toasts were honoured: —“The King”; “The Guest of the Evening”; “Mr. and Mrs. J Crothers”; and “Absent Friends.”

Felicitations were conveyed to the celebrant in a very happy manner by Mr. Crosby, who, in the course of his remarks, referred to the great popularity enjoyed by Mr. Crothers. Suitable acknowledgment of the tributes was made by Mr. Crothers. The health of the host and hostess was proposed by Mr. J. Tuhbitt, the former replying, and the toast of ‘‘Absent Friends” was proposed by Mr. Barrington Pritchard. Among the guests were Mr. and Mrs. J. Miller, Mr. and Mrs. J. Dance at Rere The dance held by the Rere Sheep Dog Trial Club ns a finale to its annual meeting is always keenly awaited, .and 1 Saturday night’s function, was, like its predecessors, a complete success. Decora!.ions of greenery, intermingled with garlands, of flowers, completely iliransiformed the Rare Hall, the gay scene offering a pleasant contrast to the wintry weather out-of-doors.

A delectable home-made supper was served formally, under the direction of Mrs. J. B. Williams and Mrs. R. G. Dobson, at tables'beautified with bowls of mixed flowers, Iceland poppies and ■pring .bulbs predominating in (he .artistic decorative scheme.

Mrs. W. Thomson’s orchestra supplied the music, and extras were contributed by several of the guests. No detail had been overlooked in the preparations for the occasion, and much of the credit for the success achieved was undoubtedly due to tho efforts of the joint secretaries, Messrs. Dawson Harris and N. Bennett.
