BALL IN MOTU

FOOTBALL CLUB FUNCTION ENTHUSIASTIC DANCERS EIrAYER FAHEWEEHED (Herald Correspondent.) The popularity of the annual ball arranged by the ’Motu Football Club and held in‘the Motu Hall on Friday night was demonstrated by tlie large crowd of enthusiastic dancers which attended. The decorations of scarlet poppies and lycopodium, with draped bunting ar.d flags, were finished with streamers of the club’s colours, black and white, looped across the stage, and a large centre cluster of balloons. The whole scheme -was very effective and much admired. Members of the Women’s Institute and other ladies interested in the club were in charge of the ( supper arrangements. The tables were daintily arranged with bowls of scarlet berries and green 'foliage, and a delicious home-made supper was served. Mrs. W. Thomson’s orchestra from Gisborne were the musicians, and extras were played by Miss Una -Reed on the piano and piano-accordion. Popular Official

During an interval in the programme an opportunity was taken to bid farewell to Mr. George Phillips, who has 'been transferred from 'Home'brook to Paritu. Air. D. Doole, secretary of the Motu Football Club, said how much everyone in the district regretted the departure of Mr. Phillips, who had been .such a strong supporter of Rugby during hi.s three years’ residence in the hill country. Mr. Phillips had represented the sub-union in all district competitions, and had represented Poverty Bay in the match against the Springboks, and more recently in other representative games. Mr. F. McLean, chairman of the Mata/wai-Motu sub-union, spoke of the efficiency and tact with which Mr. Phillips had carried out his duties as secretary of the sub-union, and also of the sportsmanlike manner in which he had entered into all forms of sport. Mr. N. Thomas, selector, and Mr. G. McPike, a member of the Koranga Football Club, endorsed the previous speakers'- remarks, and added that as captain of the Koranga club and subunion team, Air. Phillips’ place would be hard to fill. Mr. F.- -Read, president of the Motu ciub. said that during his long connection uvith the game of Rugby, players of Mr, Phillips’ standing weie rare. On behalf of the club. Mr. Read presented Mr. Phillips with a hr,nd-som-e travelling rug, and -wished him every success. • Members of the iMotu club then “chaired” Mr. Phillips round the hall while musical honours were accorded him.Mr. Phillips replied briefly, thanking the speakers for their remarks and the Motu club for their gift.

Mr. G. Phillips, who is ✓leaving the hill country shortly to take charge of the -school at Paritu, was the guest of honour at a dinner party a,t "Kafpone” -prior .to the football c.lud ball on Friday night. Members of the Motu Dramatic Circle, to which Mr. Phillips belonged, were present and the rose bowl which the circle won in the Drama Festival, formed the centre decoration of, the table. Those present were Mr. and Mrs. W. F. Robb, Mr. and Mrs. A. W. Thomson, Mr. and Mris. W. A. Wright, Mrs. H. L. Twisleton, Mrs. F. H. Bull (Gisborne), Misses M. Fisher. S. and J. Twisleton and E. Lewis; Messrs. 11. -and J. Bar-ty, L. Castles, R. and T. Twisleton, T. Scholium, R, and S. Davis. An apology for absence was received from Mr-s. I-L C. Boys and Miss J. Boys.

Mr. and Mrs. F. H. Ball and family were the -guests of Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Wi’ighlt last week-end.—Mr. C. Woods, Arapuni, has been spending •a few days with Mr. R. S. Fisher, Motu. —Mrs. A. Mclntosh, “Hihemoa," is visiting relatives in Gisborne. The annual meeting of St. Paul's Ladles Guild was held at Mrs. A. R. Pierce’s home, Whakerau road, recently. The election of officers resulted in Mrs. H. C. Boys being elected president, Miss Joan Twisleton, secretary and treasurer, and Mrs. H. L. Twisleton, vice-president. It was decided ito hold a spring flower show in September, the schedule for which will be drawn up immediately. A dainty afternoon tea was served, and the hostess was thanked l for her hospitality. Those present were Mesdames 11. L. Twisleton. R. S. Fisher, A, ; W. Thomson, H- C. Boys. N. G. N-isbett, and Miss M. Fisher. Owing to a number of counterattractions, the final euchre tournament in /the series arranged by; the Motu Halt Committee has been postponed indefinitely. Members of the Motu Football Club have consented to assist the MotuMotulhora Women’s Institute with a fancy dress dance which has been arranged to take place -this month.
