REFEREE STOPS FIGHT
PARRIS BATTERS DOWN CONVINCING VICTORY (Per Press Association.) DUNEDIN, this day. Fighting at the top of his form, Billy Parris scored a convincing victory. over Barney Down on Saturday night, administering one of the most severe drubbings a boxer ever received in a Dunedin ring. With the. possible exception of the first round, Parris easily won every round, and at the end of the eighth round Down was so far gone that it is doubtful whether he should have been allowed to continue. As soon as the gong went for the ninth, Parris connected with a left to the body and a right to the head. Then he drove a terrific left to the chin, sending Down,to the canvas. His head struck heavily and, although he gamely attempted to rise, the referee had no alternative but to stop the fight. Down collapsed on the way to his corner and was subsequently admitted to the hospital suffering from concussion.
Last night the condition cf Down was reported to be much improved, and he should be able to leave hospital in a day or two.
