VERY CONFIDENT
JAPANESE ATTITUDE CONTROL OF PACIFIC There were large numbers of Japanese in Australia and these made no secret of their confidence that it would not be long before both Australia and New Zealand would be a part of the Japanese Empire, said Mr. T. Bransgrove, New Plymouth, to a Taranagi Herald reporter. Mr. Bransgrove has just returned from an extensive tour of Australia. At Rockhampton, in Queensland, he noticed a great number of Japanese, said Mr. Bransgrove. He went into a Japanese shop and the proprietress became annoyed when he declined to buy her wares.
"You go back to New Zealand,” she said. “Very .soon Japan will have both Australia and New Zealand. You are on top now but Japan will be the one on top soon."
This was typical of the attitude of the Japanese in Australia, he said. They were very “cocky” indeed. However, Australia was awake to the menace and defence preparations were proceeding at a great pace. The Australian authorities were working on the right lines and were getting things done.
