RETURNS FOR MAY IMPORTS £1,154,000 HIGHER EXPORTS RISE £307,000 DOWN POE 11 MONTHS The return's of overseas trade for May show the value of exports, with specie excluded, to have been £G,638,000 'in New Zealand currency, cr £367,000 more than the total in May, 1938. The figure is the highest for any May returns in recent years, and is more than double the value of ■exports in May,, 1933. Imports at £5.338,000 show a marked increase of £1,154,000 on those for the same month last year. This figure also is the highest for any May for as far back as 1933. As a result the favourable commodify balance has been reduced and is the smallest since that year.
Following is a comparison of the returns for May in the past seven years, commodities only, exclusive of specie, all values being expressed in New Zealand currency:—

Exports for the first 11 months of ■the production year, which opens in July, are valued at £3,300,000 less than those for the same period of last season. The figure is ,£G,422,000 lower than the 11 months’ total an 193 G-37. Imports are £2,658,000 lower than in the same period of the last production season, in contrast with an increase
of £7,844,000 in the 11 months’ period of 1937-38 over the previous similar period. The excess of exports, £1,404,000, is by far the lowest figure for as far back as the 1932-33 season, andi compares with an excess of £2,040,000 at the same period of last season.

There was no export of specie in May, the imports being valued at £404. For the five months ended May, specie exports have been valued at £2705 and imports at £7610.
