STATE REVENUE ITEMS - ■GISBORNE COLLECTIONS Though Customs duties yielded over £3OO less for June, 1939, than for the corresponding month of 1938, the sales tax figures more than held their own, and beer excise payments fully redressed tile balance for the month, which yielded £135 more this year than last. The respective totals for June were £7664 5s 8d for this year, and £7529 8s id for June, 1938. The position of the revenue under the respective heads is shown in the following tabulation: —
For the first six months of the year, all three main headings continue to show an improvement upon the figures recorded from January to June, inclusive, in 1938, as the following tabulations indicate:—
WELLINGTON COLLECTIONS
Customs revenue collected at the port of Wellington in June amounted to £335,716, the highest figure this year and £59.292 in excess of the total for June, 1938. For the six months of the current year the revenue front this source amounts to £1,825,837, ar. increase of £51,953 compared with the corresponding period of 1938. Sales tax collections last month totalled £134,328, easily a record figure and £18,171 higher than in June, 1938. The figures for the past month, with those for June, 1938, in parentheses, are:—Net Customs revenue, £335,716 (£276,424); motor, spirit duty, £44,413 at 6d a gallon £41,673); tyre tax, £2887 (£2075); sales tax, £134,328 (£116,157); beer excise, £6524 (£5810).
CHRISTCHURCH RETURNS
An increase of more than £38,000 ir Customs receipts in Christchurch foi the first three months of the current financial year to June 30 by comparison with the corresponding period last year, is shown by returns issued !y the department. The total for this year was £528,973, compared with £490,318 last year. Returns for the month of June exceeded those of June last year ly £25,298.
