ABSENCE OF FIREMAN
COAL SHIP DELAYED HOLD-UP AT AUCKLAND (P«r Press Association.) AUCKLAND, this day. Although she was scheduled to sail last Wednesday afternoon for Westport, the Westport Coal Company's chartered steamer, Kaimui, is still in port, because she is short of firemen. She is lying idle at the western wharf. The steamer was delayed when the absence of a fireman was discovered shortly before sailing time on Wednesday. A man was signed on in place of the absent fireman, but he left the ship on Thursday morning. The steamer had been scheduled to sail that time at 10 o’clock on Thursday morning, but when the newly-engaged fireman walked off the ship, her departure was again postponed.
Endeavours were made on Thursday to find another fireman to fill the berth, but they were unsuccessful and the departure of the vessel was delayed until Friday. On Friday it was hoped to get the Kaimai away but further efforts to fill'the berth were of no avail.
The vessel still awaited the replacement of a fireman to enable her to sail and efforts to find the necessary man were resumed today.
