_ One of the most amusing fires that Wellington has known for some time (says the New Zealand limes) occurred in Custom-house quay on Tuesday afternoon. An e.vpreissnian with a load of furniture was driving serenely along the quay, when a cabman drew his attention to the fact that smoke was issuing from his load. The driver frantically tore his load off, dropping chairs ami other articles into the street, and at last 'located the Waste"—as the fire brigade says—in a kapoc mattress on the floor of his express, on which somebody must have dropped a match or a cigarette end. The mattress burst and the wind spread kapoc all oyer the street, which looked as if it had ben through a mild snowstorm. Several articles of furni-ture,-which had been in contact with the mattress, were slightly burned, and would have been in flames in a very few minutes had the fire not been detected. An extra .large clearance saje. is now on at W.: McKay and the leading drapers. 'The/object of this -extra clearance is to make room and also to raise money to pay {or .a iarsje shipment of autumn and winter goods now -on the water and arriving early in February—bought by Mr McKay while in IfOwJoa. If yon want barg&lna call at this Bale.—
