INANGAHUA COUNTY COUNCIL.

[O'JS OWN CORBESPONDBtiT.] The usual monthly meeting, was held yesterday afternoon. Present—Crs. Stevenson (chair), Irving, Scantlebury, Molnroe, Bowater, Harold, and Bell. The minutes of the previous monthly meeting and meetings of, the Executive, were read and confirmed on the motion of Or. M'lnroe, seconded by Cr. Bell. Inward correspondence was read from E.Pattersonjiunr, applyingfcr residenca area at Left-Hand Branch. Besolved fihat the Council cannot take any action in the matter. . A Main and others, for an electric light at the corner of Pick and Brennan streets. Granted. . Ro Patterson and others asking the Council for certain works to be put in hand at once. J .. , Proposed by Cr M'lnroe, that on account of the financial position ot the County? it cannot be entertained, seconded by Cr Bell and carried. Proposed by Cr Bowater, that the Engineer be instructed to prepare specifications for all work in connection with keeping the streets clean, spreading gravel, etc., etc., and that applications be invited, seconded by Cr M'lnroe and carried. A. M. Williams re gravel contract, complaining that while their drays were idle, other .drays had been employed. On matter having been referred to the Engineer, he stated that William's contract had not been interfered with. Secretary, Beefton Fire Brigade, applying for 250 yards of canvas ho3e. Granted on the motion of Or Irving, seconded bylOr Bowater. Mrs Gilmer and others re road to their property. A letter was read from ;'John Williams offering to take £8 a year for the upper road, and £l3 a year for road alongside the river, also asking for compensation for past five years. The chairman statad the survey of the land, was not completed, as far as he could learn. There is a good deal of land fenced in that should not have been. Ordered to Btand over. R. Tangey for aid to prospecting. Eeferred to applicant for further information, and the executive to deal wi h the matter. McMahon and Lee askmg the Council to repair the horse track to the Ulster Lease.

From Chairman, Victoria Institute, Capleston, applying for assistance. Proposed by Cr Harold that JBiO be granted. Seconded by Cr Bell and carried. From J. McNeill, drawing attention to the state ol the road up the Grey. Proposed by Cr Molnroe that Mr McNeill be offered the sum of £6 to make the nesessary repairs. Seconded by Cr Bowater and cafriea. Several residents at Upper Blackwater, protesting against diverting the grant for the extension of the Big Biver track, to the widening of the road. The Chairman stated that in conjunction with the Impec'or of Mines, the County Engineer and Cr Scantlebury, he had visited the locality, and had been advised by the Inspector, he would recommend the money be spept oa the widening of the road. Ordered to stand over pending r<ceipt of further advice from the Government. Keep-it-Dark Company and several residen's at Crushington, re encroachment of river. Cr. Irving proposed that the necessary work be done, seconded by Cr. Bowater and carried. Proposed by Ce. Irving, that Mr Skoglund be re-appointed the Cou< c'u's rep resentative on the Grey High School Board. Secondedby Cr. Ball and carried. Hannan and Phillips applying for occupation license over 10 acres at mouth of Eainey Creek for Mr Earncsi Corklin. Resolved that the Council cannot rocommend or object to it. Cambridge and Coy. to cut flax on the Little Grey. Resolved that the Distric Engineer be informed that there are already three applications for flax cutting 1 in that district, and that the reply cannot be given to his query until funher information has been obtained by the Council. Proposed by Cr Scantlebury that section 136, square 131, block XIV, be sold to the Reefton Jockey Club for the sum of £lO. Seconded by* Cr Harold and carried. Analysis of samples of water from the Maruia and Haupiri Springs were received from J. 8. MaoLaurin, Wellington. Proposed by Or Mclnroe that the engineer prepare plans and specifications for the expenditure of tibe grant on the Snowy Creek road. |Beconded by Cr Irving and carried. Reports from Sexton, Rate Collector, Inspector of Nuisances and County Engineer were read add received. Proposed bjrCr Irving that the Government be asked to transfer the grant of £203. voted by the Mines Department for the Maruia Boad, to widening the Crushington road. Seconded by Cr Scantlebury and carried. Proposed by Cr. Scantlebury that the Chdrmanbe authorised to sign the requisition on behalf of the County, for tho application of a telephone exchange at Reefton. Seconded by Or, Bowater and carried. Proposed by Cr. Bowater that £35 be offered to Mr Locking ton in full satis faction of all claims he has against the Council for encroachment, and on his transferring of one acre of land to the Council for gravel purposes. Seconded by Or. M'lnroe and carried. Proposed by Cr. Irving that no tenders be accepted for County work, which are 15% over or under the Engineer's estimate. Seconded by Cr. Bell and carried. ( Proposed by Cr Irving, that no new works be undertaken until the County is in abetter financial position. Secondedby Cr Bell and carried. Proposed by Cr Scantlebury, that the Strand on the river side be fenced with heavy wire netting aai two lengths of barb wire, in lien of galvanised iron, provided satisfactory arrangements can be made with the present contractors. Seconded by Cr M'lnroe and carried. Meeting lapsed at 6 p.m.
