CHAMBERLAIN AT MAFEKING.
[pee peess association.—copyright] Capetown, Jan 29. Mr Chamberlain replied unfavourably to the Maftking Annexation Committee's request for the annexation of British Beehuan aland to the Transvaal. He complimented the defenders on their glorious defence of the town, such as no other nation could have accomplished. He disclaimed any intention to coax the Boers by flattering words. He would be glad of their friendship, but the -British were able to govern the country without help. His words deep'y increased the burghers, who loudly cheered him. Mr Chamberlain received Khamo, the the Chief of the Bamangwato, and Linchive the Chief of the Bakwena, and other Beohuanaland chiefs. He declined the King's message exhorting them to loyal and peace, and promis ing protection.
