STORM IN CANTERBURY.

(PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.) Christchurch, Jan 28 Th 9 damage caused to the grain and root crops in the country districts by yesterday's storm is greater than was anticipated. One farmer near ;Bakaia river estimates his loss at £2OOO. In Ellesmere and Brookside district many hundreds of acres of grain have been ruined, the barley suffering most, while hundreds of acres of potatoes and turnips have had [the tops cut clean off. Hundreds of acres of crops are ruined in Springston district The Lincoln district als.isuffered greatly. So far as can be ascertained no damage was done on Banks Peninsula. Waimate, January 28.

An unusually heavy hail and thunderstorm passed over portion of the district yesterday forenoon. The hail was very large, and played havoc wherever the storm traversed, especially in gardens by stripping all kinds of plants and leaving nothing but the stems. The grain crops do not appear to be much injured, except in one case of the suburbs of the towD, where a ten-acre paddock of wheat was completely cut down, and is net worth cutting. The storm was not confined to a narrow strip, and passed out to sea. Saow lay a couple oj inches deep, and snowballing was indulged in. The snow in the shade lay till this morning.
