NOTES FROM WELLINGTON.
(per press association.) Wellington, Jan 27 Colonel Webb succeeds Nowall as officer commanding the Wellington district. In connection with having the best advice in regard to utilising the rivers of New Zealand for generating electrtcal energy, Government intends to get a report from an expert who is expected to arrive from Hobart next week. : Further reductions are being made in the Defence Department. The services of a large number of temporary clerks will be dispensed with at the end of the month.
The carpenters feel much aggrieved at the recent award of the Arbitration Court affecting their trade and held a mass meeting to-night to consiler the situation. The opinion is- generally expressed that the carpenters should not bo paid less that Is 6d per hour. A resolution was passed expressing the opinion that the award was contrary to the weight of evidence and declaring that the Arbitration Court is unworthy of confidence. A motion in favor of withdrawing from the work was 'not seconded, but it was decided to demand Is 6d an hour from the beginning of February.
