The fire in Coloey Hatch Asylum started at 5 30 in the morning in the annexe containing two hundred women still abed.
A high wind was blowing and the a.nnexe was quickly a mass of flames. The pipe leading to the artesian well was under repairs, and the water supply was scarce. Many lire brigades were in attendance.
The Asylum officials and attendants made heroic efforts to save the patients, but they experienced difficulty in getting the afflicted to understand their peril. Many resisted their attempts to rescue. Numbers were overpowered in the corridors, Two nurses perished. The latest report gives the number of deaths at fifty.
