We are pleased to notice that Miss Maud Casey, one of the pupils of the Convent School, is among those who successfully negotiated the matriculation examination at th 9 last sitting. We congratulate the Rev Mother and her talented pupil on the success obtained. The weather report to-day shows the temperature of West Coast stations to have been Westport 58 degrees, Greymouth 63, Hokitika 57 and Bealey 53. There is a considerable sea along the the West Coast with moderate tides. The only information we have to hand regarding the cricket match at Blenheim against the Englishmen, is that on Saturday at mid-day the local men had lost 14 wickets for 33 runs. On Friday night the concert of the season, in connection with the visit of the English Cricketers, will take place under the able guidance of Mr Cadzow, who has secured the best Hokitika, Kumara, Nel son and Greymouth talent for the occasion. In a future issue we will he able to give a few of the chief items. Messrs G. W. Moss and Co will hold an important sale at Goodwin's store, Ngahere, on Wednesday, 4th February, of coaching plant and horses, also leasehold section in the township of Blackball. Mr Edward Smith, a very old rosident of Brunner, announces in another column that he has leased the premises lately occupied by Mr James Newton atTaylorville, and will open in a few days with a now and up to date stock of drapery, clothing, etc, which he will sell for cash at town prices. We would ask for a trial for Mr Smith in bis new venture,* and if popularity leads to success we feel sure Mr Smith with his obliging .ways will meet with good support. Messrs Macdonald, Wilson and Co., auctioneers, Wellington, insert in our advertising columns a lengthy advertisement to the effect that they will hold an important sale at the Camp, Lower Hutt near Wellington, on Thursday 12th February. Sixty Clydesdale mares and Geldings, the Clydesdale stallion, "Federation," twenty-two tip-drays, traction road engine with crane attachment, by Avelingand Porter, also a large quantity of thaft and leading harness, horse covers and sundries" The sale is to be held on account of Mr J. T. Jones, the contractor for the Hatt River embank-
merit, who has finished his contract and has no further usa for the horses and plant. The sale is one of the most important of its kind that has ever been held in the North Island, and the horses are described at a grand lot. Among the candidates who gained "Credid" at the University Junior Scholarships examination was Master Fredk. Eitchingham of the Greymouth DistricS High School. Master Batchingham, besides having gained a place in the honors list, has passed the Barristers' General Knowledge Examination. Miss Vida Berkley, another pupil of the school, has passed the matriculation examination and qualified for the Solicitors' General Knowledge.
Mr Roihenberg, who has been fourteen years in the employ of Sharland and Co., Ltd, eight years of which he has travelled the West Coast in their interests, is about severing his connection with the firm. He joins Harris and Co, a Christchurch wholesale firm, and will take up a responsible position in their warehouse at Wellington. Mr Roihenberg has made numerous friends throughout Greymouth and distriof, who will |be| sorry that he has withdrawn himself from "the roed," but til will congratulate him upon his advancement in the commercial world.
In order to allow the civil servants on the Coast an opportunity of witnessing the matoh between Lord Hawke'e team and the Westland 22 on Friday next, Mr Guinness M.H.R. telegraphed to Sir J. G. Ward asking him to grant a holiday at all the Government Offices from Reef ton to Boss to which he received the following reply :—"ln reply to your telegram, instructions have b; en given to close the public offiaes on the occasion of the visit of the English cricketers as desired.— J, G. Wabd."
Mr T. Montague and several others are promoting the New Zealand Austral cycle meeting, to be held during December next. The first prize will amount to between £250 and £3OO.
Attempts to recover gold on the wrecked steamer Elingamite proved unsuccessful. The vessel is now in thirty fathoms of water, and owing to the Btrength of the current the diver could not go down.
There are at present 55 registered unions of workers in the Wellington district, of which 141 are io Wellington City.
We regret (ears the Boss Advocate), to learn that the Bev Father Bogue shows but little or no improvement in health. During the week the reverend gentleman has had a visit from Dean Martin of Hokitika, and the Bev. Father M'Enroe, of Australia, and to say that Father Bogue appreciates the visits is saying but little, a 3 the solicitude Bhown by the many friends who somotimes make long journeys to meet him, is the one bright ray in his sore trial. The Bev. Father has also had many visitors from Hokitika and the surrounding districts, and he is very thankful for the many acts of kindness shown him.
The new railway viaduct over the Mangatera stream, on the Woodville Napier liDe, has been completed and tested. The test was made by three engines, weighing 150 tons. The viaduct is 332 f o long, and the rails are 85ft above the water.
Daring last month £42,125 was sent ou; of West Australia on post office order account, against £36,914 for the same ruon:h last year. Toe ;otal gold output in this State during the same month amounted to 189,7540 z, againsc 177,1650 z for the corresponding month of the previous year, making a total yield for the year of 2,177,4410 z. Although there is a large number of unemployed in Perth (West Australia) at present, and a good deal of clamour for work to be provided for them, when the Labour Bureau wanted fifty men for work in the country only 49 were obtainable.
