'. —« [pee press association.] Accident to an Old £ge Pensioner. Cheistchubch, Jan 25. Aboui four o'clock this morning when Con'table Treahy was passing through Cathedral square he discovered an old age pensioner (George Waters) in a fire tank hanging on to the railing. His coat and waistcoat were hangirjg on the railing outside. The man was in a very exhausted state from immersion and nearly drowned. The constable removed him to the hospital, where he is getting on satisfactorily. Cycling Meeting. At the Christchurch Cycling Club's meeting to.day there was fine weather and a large attendance. Great interest was taken in the match between Martin aud Southerland. The first distance in the match (one mile) was won by Southerland who after a painfully slow race jumped at tho right moment and "left" his opponent badly. In the second distance (20 miles) a number of accidents occurred and after completing about fifteen miles Martin retired, leaving Southerland to win the purse of £SO and the wager of £25 aside.
