The Wellington Match. (PEE PEEBB ASSOCIATION). Wellington, Jan 16. Wellington were disposed of this morning for 243—Walters (not out) 17, Hales 15. Seven of the runs scored t6-day were bj es. Scarcely had the men withdrawn than the weather, which had been threatening, broke into a sharp shower, and
caused play to be postponed till after lunch. The rain didn’t hurt the pitch, but made the grass greasy, and put tfta bowlers at some disadvantage. Tho Englishmen made a good start, for Warner find Burnup put up 42 before the former was bowled for 16, and with Fane the Kentishmefc did still better, and the score was carried to 108, Burnup doing the lion’s share of the hitting, and Fane contenting himself with singles. Holdsworth was then put on, and oil tho second ball Burnup was finely stumped after a chanceleas innings of 69. After be left Pane changed his style and hit well and often. Taylor followed suit, and 150 was brought up for 2 hours, 16 wore hit in three ovfirg from Stephenson, and 35 runs were put on in 20’ minutes, i Taylor was then caught at short leg for 35 with the total 172. Tho fielding up to this bofe comparison with tho Englishmen’s,- but with his score at 57 Fane was missed twice in successive overs, and had made himself top score when Upham, who had been bowling without success, came on again and took his off stump at 213, of Which Fane claimed 70. Bosanqvfet made 12, but Dowson, Johnson, and Whatman failed and 8 were down for 239. Thompson, the professional, who had been batting briskly, was then joined by Leathara, and tho score was carried to 263 when stumps were drawn, the former being 40 and tiro latter 8. Five bowlers were tried and all got wickets, but none of them bowled up to their best, still they canmt be said to have done badly. The weather interfered with the attendance, which was about 1500.
