The Conference of Australasian Steamship Owner’n (Federation and Federated Seamen’s Union is opened. It considered the proposal to terminate the agreement between the two bodies. The day was occupied by the owners representatives explaining the reasons for seeking to terminate the agreement.. They contended that the Australian shipping trade had fallen off to such an extent that in the majority of oases it was impossible to run tha steamers profitably unless the expenses were considerably reduced. The other chief factors were the Increasing competition of foreign vessels, increased taxation of shipping under the Federal .tariff.

The Conference adjourned till tomorrow.
