DISASTROUS BUSH FIRES.
Loss of Life and Enormous Damage. Whole Dfctricts~Bwept by Fire. [per press association—copyright.] Melbourne, Deo 30. Bush fires destroyed fifty thousand acres of grass, and a large area of crops and bagged wheat. In the Wagga District numbers of settlers were burned out. A man named Cu zey assisting in fighting the flames was burned to death and two others severely scorched. The heat and drought in the interior is severe. In many places the glass registers 100 to 113. The heat wave is unabated 'and registers up to 110. Bush fires are in all directions in the country. For sixteen miles round Benalla the flames completely swept everything. Many settlers houses and thousands of acres of crops, much stacked wheat and bay stock was destroyed. The township of Thoona was surrounded and was only saved by the strenous efforts of the residents. At Kilmore thousands of acres of grass crops were eaten up. Similar reports come from various widely seperated districts. Many narrrow escapes are recorded.
