Bishop Thornton, formerly of Ballarat, spqaking at Blackburn denounced Kruger as the chief obstacle to peace and continuing the war from mere hatred. Although 5,270 Free Church ministers signed the Daily News’ peace manifesto, 9,339 abstained, including half the Baptists and two-thirds of the congregational Presbyterians, and four-fifths of the Wesleyans. Mackenzie captured the Carolina convoy, and took seventeen prisoners. Several hundred additional of the surrendered burghers have joined the National Scouts, the detachments of which commanded by Celliora and Cronje, have performed excellent work. A number of Brideford’s men were caught by the enemy, and after being stripped were released, Kruger regrets the removal of the concentration camps, believing that in the present position they will offer a hindrance to operations.
