Our readers are reminded , of the swimming sports to be held at Cobden tomorrow afternoon, when we expect to see a record attendance to this branch of sport, which is a great necessity in a colony with New Zealand’s large waterboard. Large entries have been received for the various events and additional interest is created by the strong contingent of Christchurch swimmers that arrived yesterday. Last season we had a taste of the qualify of the visiting competitors, but this is a far stronger team including as it does some good all round, A. B. Truscott is an ex-New Zealand champion, Oliver was a prominent competitor in championships last season, Calvert is a first-class diver, Harry Williams is a member of the Champion Flying Squadron team, and F. Howarth has done a great deal of racing in Wellington and Christchurch with much success. Of the local men Hamilton has already won the championship events including the 220 yards championship ofNewZeain 1899 and the following season was sent to Sydney as this colony s representative) in the Australasian championships. Garth is the makings of a real good man, and steady training only is necessary to put him in the foremost rank. Of the school boys W. Gittoes is the most promising swimmer we have seen and may bief fair to become the chanpion of the Coast in a few years. With such good material competing we have no doubt, but that this deserving club will meet with the support that they deserve.
