AUSTRALASIAN CHAMPIONSHIP MEETING.
(per press association.)
Auckland, Dec 20.
The first day of the Australasian Championship was brought off in line weather, but a strong westerley wind interfered somewhat with the runners. It favoured the sprinters but in the back stretch it handicapped the dislanee men. The track had not recovered from the recent rains but was fairly hard. Under the circumstances the times put up in most of the events was good. In the 440 Championship Oxlade came with a great rattle at the finish and drew well away from the field, O’Reilly had a walk over in the shot putting, Madill. not competing owing to the death of a relative and is not likely to compete to-morrow in the hammer event.
In the three mile walk all the competitors but Barratt and Wilson dropped out. These two kept together till 200 yards from home when Wilson spurted and left Barrett standing winning by fifey yards. In the mile run, Simpson ran wonderfully well considerirg the track and wind, putting up the best time dono in Australasia for several years, 3-sths of a second outside the New Zealand record. Ho smothered the field at the finish and was loudly cheered for his performance.
