A duty of 4s per 100 ft has been imposed on “compcboard," or timber with a backing of paper pulp cemented on to it. The Commissioner of Trade and Customs holds that this is a substitute for sawn timber dressed (which is a dutiable article) and that it can be used for a similir purpose. During the progress of a thunderstorm on Monday afternoon a thunderbolt burst just over the house of a resident of Avonside, Canterbury. There was a deafening report, and the inmates experienced a shock such as is given by an electric bat ery. Although no actual damage was done the iron roof was whitened and some bricks were loosened from a chimney.
