SIR JOSEPH WARD IN SOUTHLAND.

Gore, Dec 17,

Sir Joseph Ward laid the foundation stone of the new Gore post office this morning in the presence of a largo crowd. In the evening he addressed a largely attended public meeting in the Town Hall, and was accorded a hearty reception. He spoke for two hours, and was listened to with deep attention. He predicted a balance of £500,000 revenue over expenditure for the financial year ending 31st March, 1903', and held out bright prospects for the future of the colony. He touched on nearly every matter of public importance and his remarks were punctuated with applause. In the evening a banquet was tendered to him and was attended by a great many. A pleasant evening was spent, and among those present were the Hon, H. Feldwick. and Messrs M'Nab, Gilfodder nnd Hanan, M.H.R’s.
