A few minutes after three the Australians commenced to follow on. Trumper and Darling opened to the bowling of Barnes and Braund. Twelve runs were recorded when Darling gave Jessop a beautiful one handed high—l wicket for 12. Hill’s career was brief, Braund’s third ball scattering the wicket without the total undergoing alteration. Noble had a couple of appeals for leg before in his first over. He shaped very unhappily before the Somerset bowler. Trumper played him cautiously, but took Barnes less seriously and made runs off him by late cutting. Finally at 44 Blythe displaced Barnes. Noble reached double figures. The half century was put up in 49 minutes. Immediately after Liliey snapped Trumper off Blythe—3 wickets for 52. Gregory was next and played carefully, but Noble followed Trumper’s example and gave Liliey a chance —4 to 59. M’Leod appeared only to be dismissed without scoring. Blythe then had an average of 3 wickets for two runs. Gregory, however, played both bowlers successfully. Kelly had put on 9 when he gave a chance on the boundary but Hayward dropped it. There was an interval of sloiv play, Gregory having kept with his score at nineteen. Kelly added three and gave a soft catch to Braund at point—6 for 89. Trumble succeeded. A good partnership with Gregory followed with lively play. Trumble nicely placing boundary hits obtained twelve runs in one over, Jessop fielding brilliantly. The century was reached after an hour and forty-eight minutes play. Barnes then replaced Blythe. Another 20 were added when Trumble touched Barnes and Liliey secured the ball—7 for 120. Laver was of no service and retired with a duck—B for 136. Howell joined Gregory who was doing his best on a forlorn hope. The bowler gave a sensational display of hitting and in thirteen minutes he knocked up 31 runs with the Englishmen fielding out on the boundary. Before ho had gone far, however be lost Gregory who skied one M’Laren, having batted one hour and forty minutes —9 for 147. Jones partnered Howell, who raised enthusiasm to a high pitch with terrific strokes. Ho obtained 16 off one over one of Barnes. Jones made a couple and then sent up a catch terminating one of the worst dis-r-'jiys given by an Australian eleven. There were sixteen thousand present. Canterbury y. Wellington.
