WAIMEA HYDRAULIC SLUICING CLAIM.

(our own correspondent.)

The official starting of the Waimea Company’s Hydraulic Sluicing and “ Blow Up ” claims took place on Saturday in the presence of about 150 specta. tors, including the direclors and a number of shareholders from Greymonth and Kumara.

To Mrs. T. V. Byrne was given the honour of turning water through the nozzle for the first time. The water was first turned on to the sluicing claim on the hill and later on to the “ Blow Up " on the Flat; and the manner in which ~ they worked showed both to be in splen- ’ did working order, reflecting the greatest credit on the Manager, Mr W. Atkinson. Great interest was taken in the “ Blow Up," it being the first of its kind seen in the district, and was the centre of attraction all day.

Mr T. V. Byrne, Westland County Chairman, in a brief speech, complimented the directors in having such an up-to-date plant, and wished them every success in their new venture. Mr Byrne called for'three cheers for the directors, which were heartily given. Mt Burger on behalf of the Directors thanked all present for their attendance, also Mr Byrne for his kind remarks. He also referred to the heavy expense incurred by the company, viz., £BOOO in putting the claims in working order, and hoped that the County Chairman, Water race Manager and others would do all in their power to assist the company in obtaining free water. Before concluding Mr Burger wished to state that the directors were highly pleased and satisfied with the Manager, Mr W. Atkinson, for the splendid and workmanlike manner in which the claims worked.

Three cheers wore then given for Mr Atkinson and family. At the invitation of Mr Burger an adjournment was made to the Royal Hotel where fully 50 couple were entertained. The health of the Directors, Manager and workmen were drunk with musical honors.

In the evening a dance was held in Hanrahan’s Public Hall there being fully 40 couple present, dancing being kept up till 11 45 p m.
