At the recent musical examination the Associated Board of (he Ko. al Academy gold medal was awarded to Miss Connie M'Clusky with 137 out of a possible 150. The young lady is a pupil of St. Mary’s Convent, which, since 1897, has carried off the gold medal three times; while last year Miss Flanagan missed it only by one point, and secured a silver medal. An Eighth Contingent. The Premier is consulting members of Parliament by telegraph as to their opinion on the question of sending an eiglr'i contingent to South Africa. He declared himself absolutely opposed to State aid to Catholics, and said that while he had never tasted liquor in his life, he was against prohibition.
Presentation. Mr Millar, member for Dunedin, was presented with a purse of sovereigns and gold chronograph by his constitutents in recognition of his services towards securing an all red British service between New Zealand and England. Found Dead. Christchurch, This Day. The Inspector of Police has received information that Seaton M’Laughliu was found dead, from a shot wound, in his house. It is supposed to bo a case of suicide.
