An Insane Patient Kills a China-
man.

A Chinaman named Ah Tie, an inmate of the Seacliff Asylum, was killed this morning by another patient in the institution. The patient stole a stake from the garden and brained the Chinaman. Both were refractory patients—the Chinaman for repeatedly attempting to run away, his assailant for suicidal tendencies. Hitherto tho man had been quite harmless. At the inquest the verdict returned was that death was caused by blows inflicted by an insane patient. Carroll at Jerusalem. Wanganui, December G. The Hon James Carroll telegraphed as follows •“ Meeting at Jerusalem. Great success. A fire oc3urred this afternoon in the business part of the town with the result that the stables at the rear of a grocer’s shop and a bakehouse were gutted. The insurance on the stable and contents was £175 in the New Zealand Insurance office.
A Threat of Libel. Westport, December 6.
A threat of libel has been received by the proprietor of the Westport News from D, T, Gibbard, claiming JGSOO damages for a false, malicious and liefamatory libel, alleged to be contained i,n a series of articles, entitled “ Story of the Dredging Boom.” The Colonial Bank.
The Colonial Bank liquidation was mentioned in the Supreme Court to-day, when the former liquidators applied for delivery for“cancellation of the surety bond, and the official liquidator (Official Assignee) applied for remuneration. Both matters were postponed. Dr Brent stated that ho hoped to be able on Friday next to apply for leave to pay the final dividend. This, it is“understood, will be a fraction over one shilling. Mr H. D. Bedford, a candidate for the Caversham seat, addressed the electors this evening, and had a good hearing. Ho would give a general support to Government measures and support the rating on unimproved values, and is a prohibitionist By request no vote of thanks was passed.
