ANOTHER SLAVERY EXPEDITION.

Another British expedition has set out from Lagos, its main object being the suppression of slavery in certain parts of We3t Africa. One of the distinguishing features about these little expeditions is that we rarely hear anything about them until they are safely over and done with. That was the case with the last expedition in Northern Nigeria. One day we were told that the town of Yola had been captured by our troops and the Emir driven into banishment.

"Where is Yola, and what had the Emir done ?" people asked. The answer was supplied later by official despatches. The Emir's chief offence wa3 slave raiding, and tho immediate occasion of his punishment was his refusal to receive a letter from our authorities. That was certainly a Aost ill-judged proceeding on the part of any African potentate who was within reach of our river steamers, and that was the lesson the Emir of Yola learnt to his cost. Thoy only dangerous moment in the expedition was when the troops had to attack through the narrow gates of the city, enfiladed on both sides. Rut the splendid courage of the Haussas —who doubtless largely comprise Colonel Montaro's expedition—once more saved the situation, and showed that in the making of the black soldier our British officers had reaped another great success.
