NAUTICAL ENQUIRY.

(per peess association.)

CIIFISTCHUBCH, DoC 3.

The magisterial enquiry into the capping of the schooner Ron?a in Pelorus Sound, wis held at Lyttelton today before Mr Bishop H. M., and Captains Lundy, and Gibson. After evidence had been heard, MiBishop said that the court was of opinion that Otto Paterson, had not taken sufficient precaution, and had been guilty of error of judgement. The Court wa9 utterly unable to satisfactorily account for the mannor in which the vessel had cigsizad as described, if ordinary precautions had baen taken. It was only a slight puff, and it wa3 within the knowledge of tho master, that he had what was called a tender vessel. He had laid there to discharge ballast, and had undoubtedly considered the interests of the owner more than those of the men on board.

Under the circumstances tho Court must mark its sense of disapprobation of the master running such a risk for his owner's sake, and inflict some slight punishment. Without wishing to weigh too heavily upon him, he would have to pay the costs of enquiry £5 ss.
