FIRE ON THE WAIMATE.

[per tress association]

Napikr, Dec 5,

It was confidently hoped last night that the worst of the fire had been passed and the Hastings engine which had been sent for about noon returned without boing used. Detachments of the Napier brigade with their engine stood by all night, steam in the meantime being pumped into the burning hold. At 3 30 this morning smoke was again observed issuing from number 4 hold with the steam, and it was found necessary to resume pumpiogin water, This time efforts to locate the seat of the fire were successful, and although it is deemed advisable to again send for the Hastings steamer it is now believed that the danger is over. The fire is thoroughly suppressed in mimber 4 hold.
