GREY LICENSING BENCH.

THIS DAY. (Before Messrs Fetrie (chair), Larkin, M'Xay, BignelL Flynn.) The Police reported that the necessary alterations and improvements required by the Bench at the annual meeting, to the Commercial, Empire, Hamilton's, Gillan's, and Kelly's hotels had been complied with.

They also reported that arrangements were being made by Mr Ashton, who was burnt out by the fire in .Richmond Quay, for putting up a new building. They reported that conditions attached to the Duke of Edinburgh, Waverley, Terminus, Junction, and St Kilda hotels had not been attended to, no action whatever having been taken. The Bench generally intimated that the time had arrived when hotels should provide better accommodation, and gave this intimation in time for the consideration of those concerned in licensing matters at the next annnal meeting.

In regard to the Duke of Edinburgh Hotel, James Brimble stated t that plans for the new building would be ready in about a fortnight. That the delay, so far, had been occasioned through the estate of his late father not being quite' settled. The Bench adjourned consideration for one month to enable the production of plans and bona fides as to the proceeding with the work. Waverley Hotel. Mr. Hannan who appeared for the owners stated that this was a case where a difficulty had also been experienced in settling, the property having been made over to three daughters of the late Mr. Drew. There was some doubt, he said, as to the decision of the Committee whether a new building was ordered to be put up or merely extensixe alterations and repairs. He thought the proposal for an entirely new building was somewhat drastic. The Bench, after consultation, adjourned the hearing for a month to enable the production of plans for the proposed additions, but did not in any way pledge itself to accept same. Terminus Hotel, Brunnerton—No appearance of licensee in this case. The Bench considered this case one of pure neglect or defiance and adjourned it for one month to enable compliance with the conditions attached to the grants failing which the license would be jepordised. Junction Hotel—This was a question of placing a lamp outside the building. Adjourned for a month for compliance. St Kilda Hotel—No improvement reported on by the police. Licensee given one month to comply with police recommendations.

Gilmer Hotel—Bebuilding of wall ordered.
