A NEW SETTLEMENT DISTRICT.
The opening up of the rich lands of the Waikato district and the King Country by the Government and private individuals is resulting in an exodus of young settlers from the Taranaki district to those loca'ities. The facility with which good land can be sold at a big price in Taranaki, and the equal ease with which productive sorts may be bought with half the money further North is the main reason for this state of things. The ears of South Island farmers are also being tickled with stories of good land at cheap rates to be got in the districts south of Auckland, and already enquiries are being made by residents in Canterbury and «'tago, who are projecting a change of locality. Amongst those who have recently acquired land in the Waikato district is Mr lianstead, the gentleman who son e time ago came into prominence as an honorary immigrant agent, and by his articles in ,: The Clarion," persuaded a large number of English socialists to come to this colony. Mr Eanstead has been living in retirement in Christchurch, but has determined to join his son and "go upon the land."
