Grooms and Conductors' Dispute. Wellington, This Day. The City Council has received demands from the grooms and conductors for increases, which it estimates at about £'looo a year, and has decided to. carry the matter straight to the Arbitration Court. Captain Seddon. Captain Seddon, son of the Premier, who lately returned, was entertained at a sociul last evening, and presented with a dressing case by the Clyde Quay branch of the Liberal and Labour Federation. New Settlers. Eighteen settlers, sent out for the Taraoaki District by William Courtney, arrived by tho Bimutaka. They are mostly young men with a fair amount of capital. The Miramar Estate. The City Council have decided to abandon the option which it held for the purchase of the Miramar estate. Earthquakes at Cheviot. This morning's advices from Cheviot state that another severe shock of earthquake was felt at 11 8, and that there were also several tremors. Auckland This'Day. Stevenson F.R.A.S. predicted last week that predicted shocks at Cheviot would continue during this week owing to the position of tho moon with tho earth. A Disabled Steamer. Dunbdi!!, Nov 28,

The Te Anau did not reach Dunedin till late this evening. She picked up the Pukaki off Timarau. The Pukaki left here yesterday morning for the West Coast and apparently broke down. The Te Anau brought her to Port Chalmers and left her there, coming up to Dnnedin. Tli9 nature of the Pukaki's breakdown was not ascertained bore.

The Supreme Court. The case of Mary Pearce, charged with the attempted mm dor of Jane Benwick, by shooting her with a revolver, occupied the Supreme Court all day. Mr Hanlon for the defence called no evidence but made a strong speech. The jury returned a verdict of unlawfully wounding, with recommendation to merey on the ground of great provocation. Sentence was deferred. In the case of throwing Bcalding water on Mrs Elizabeth Gray, mother of Mrs Renwick, the same accused .pleaded guilty to assault so as to cause actual bodily harm, and sentence was deferred.

Dunedin, This Day. ■ U the Supreme Court, the Judge said dealing with Mary Pearce convicted of the shooting case, said he did not think the truth had been given by either side. He complimented the jury, and thought the ends of justice would be met by fining accused £5 for unlawfully wounding, and £5 for assault. His Honor's decision appeared to give general satisfaction, H.M.S. Lizard. Wellington, This Day. H.M.S. Lizard has arrived from Sydney this morning. Distressing Railway Accident. Cheistchuech, Nov 29. Henry Craze, aged 15, a "Press" runner was killed through falling off an early train from Springfield this morning. He was attempting to cross from one carriage to another when his foot slipped and he fell under one of the wheels which passed over his abdomen and severed an arm and leg.
