GREYMOUTH STATE SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

The usual monthly Dueling was held at the Education Board’s office on Tuesday evening. Present—. Messrs Bignell (chair), Gittos, Harper, iavrall, Wainwrigjit, and F. H. Kilgour

From Mrs James Kerr and family, thanking the committee for their kind sympathy in their late bercavoment. — Received.

From tbe head master, stating that the average number of pupils on the roll for the month of October was 474 - 70, and the average attendance 423'075. He stated that five pupils rarely ever attended the school, and unless the average attendance improved the school would run the risk of being left without the additional male assistant provided for by the new Government scale that comes into force next January. Resolved that the caretaker be instructed to take proceedings against all those parents, who did not send their children regular to school. Resolved that the school close for their Xmas holidays on Friday, 20th December, for four weeks. Resolved that a committee, consisting of Messrs Ring, Forsyth, Wainwright, Bignell and Kilgour, act with the head master and his assistants in purchasing the attendance prizes. The Visiting Committee, Messrs Thomas and Ring, reported that everything was most satisfactory at the school, which was a credit to the caretaker, Mr. Jackson.

From Mrs Jones, Taylorville, asking for an enquiry into punishment of her son. The Chairman stated that he had handed the letter to the headmaster for his reply, which stated that had the boy informed him he was living in Greymouth for a few days, and was unable to procure a note until such time as he went home, he would not have been punished. After a long discussion, it was resolved “ that a letter be written to Mrs Jones informing her that had her son given the reply to the headmaster similar to the one given by her to tue committee, which he oonld have-done, •eeing that the teacher gave him until jest day to excuse his absence, the committee have no doubt that the boy would not have been punished.” Several accounts were passed for payment.

Messrs Wainwright and Yarrall were tppointed a Visiting Committee for the month.
