SHIPBUILDING RECORD.

The return of vessels, other than war* ships, under construction in the United Kingdom during the past three months, compiled by Lloyd's Register of Shipping, show an increase, and the tonnage figures are the highest on record.

The number of such vessels under construction at the close of the quarter ended 30th September was 477, and tho gross tonnage was 1,414,120, being an increase of 25 vessels and of 210,112 tons gross on the corresponding quarter of last year, and an increase in tonnage of 105,000 compared with the last qnarter, During tho quarter 197 vessels, of 420,088 gross tons were commenced, and 159 vessels of 433,424 gross tons, were launched. The greater number of vessels under construction are for British owners. The following table shows the countries for which most of ate intended: — United Kingdom, 352 ships, 1.131,784 gross tonnage; British colonies. 20, 15.220; Austria-Hungary, 17, 51,995; Denmark 1, 10,000 ; Frar.ee 7, 4102 ; Germany 9. 31,895 ; Ho.'land 10, 42,000 ; Turkey 7, 4,406 ; Russia, 2, 10,350. The intending ownership of 36 vessels' of 85,138 gross tons is not stated. Of the 477 ships, eighteen arc of 10.000 tons and over.

The number of ship 3 excluding warships under construction in Franca and Germany, Italy, and the United States are, according to the latest returns : —United Kingdom 477 ships, 1,204,008 gross tonnage ; United States 65, 222,526 ; Germ*uy 57, 198,570 ; France 52, 142,915 ; Italy 31, 64,297.
