OUR KUMARA LETTER.

(OUB OWN COBBESPONDENT.)

Kcjiaba, November 26,

Mr Wm Deavoaux, the popular host of Bretnond’a Hotel and a comparitively now comer amongst us, has signalised his advent by becoming elected to the seat in the Borough Council rendered vacant by the death of Mr O. W. Anderson. Mr Deavoaux is to commended on the step ho has taken, as it shows he intends taking an active interest in matters pertaining to the welfare of the community. May he have a useful public career. The timber for renewing the covering over the Government water-race at the intersection of Church and Tui streets, has been lying at the spot for a considerable time Perhaps the narrowly averted accident that befell a little girl, a daughter of Mr A. Helms of this town when one of the planks broke, and she became pinned until the plank had to be removed by the aid of a saw, will bring home the necessity for at once patting the work in hand. Mr G. Haymes of Church Street has just undergone a very severe attack of inflamation of the bowels, but is now much improved. .His friends will welcome him gladly to hia old life once again.

A programme of the concert to bo held in the Theatre Boyal on Wednesday night in aid of St. Patrick’s School, is just to hand. It is evident from the variety and quality of the items to be given that the Bev Father o‘Hallahan who has organised the entertainment has spared no pains to cater for the public taste. Greymouth, Hokitika, Stafford, and local artists will figure before a Kumara audience for the first time. The concluding part, a farce entitled “ John Dobbs,” is well advanced under the direc ion of Mr J. Bochford, and members taking part will be able to give a good account of themselves. It is enough to say that the scenic effects are under the charge of Mr J. Bennie, who is a past-master with the brush.
