CRICKET.

[per PRESS ASSOCIATION —COPYRIGHT.] England y New South Wales.

Sydney, November 22.

The weather was glorious, the sun being tempered by a cool breeze. 9,000 were present. The wicket was in perfect condition, but the cricket fell below what such a wicket should have produced. Gregory won the toss and decided to bat. Trumper and Hopkings gave an excellent display, the former hitting freely during his partnership with Noble, and the English bowling was heavily punished, Gunn’s first over giving the pair ten. Poidevin compiled his score somewhat laboriously and lost his wicket through a rotten stroke. Trumper’s innings contained one chance towards its end. He eventually lost his wicket in playing forward to a tempting one from Braund. A good deal of interest was centred in Clark, the Sydney colt, who knocked up his score attractively. The play generally was tedious.

The fielding of the Englishmen was fine and kept the runs down. Jessop was particularly brilliant. Hopkins made the hit of the day into the pavilion. When Howell, last man, partnered Kelly, both went in for hard hitting. Howell knoched up his score in dashing style, but in trying a risky run ho lost his wicket. In bowling Jessop got in seme occasionally fast stuff, but Braund troubled the batsmen with his variety more than all else. Gunn frequently was no-balled.
