GAS EXTENSION.

Gas as a motor is rapidly coming into favor in Greymouth, as indeed it has been prominent in other parts of the world, where its cheapness, reliability, and safety has long been recognised. Here the residents are all interested in the gas works, it being their own property. They will be pleased to learn that the Chairman of the Gas Com* mittee’s forecast of the result of the first year’s return has been verified ; that, as a matter of fact, his estimate of profit has been exceeded, and that there is every probability of a still further advance. Consumers will, naturally enough, commence ere long to talk of a reduction, and such reduction, we dare say, will ere long be agreed to. During this year, however, there will be a large outlay in order to meet the increased consumption. In point of fact, the trade has outgrown the appliances, and as, under the fostering care of Mr Kennedy, the expansion continues to “ march on,” it is necessary to go on with extension at once. Additional retorts will be put up at once, and a large gasometer capable of holding 50,000 cubic feet of gas. This has become necessai y owing to the large and increased demand that will be made in the next few months for motors and ordinary consumption. With judicious management and fostering care, we look forward ere many years are past to the gas being able to pay all the interest on our water and drainage loans, and thfs too while the price is considerably reduced to the consumers.
