THE A.l. GOLD DREDGING COMPANY.
At the present, when gold dredging does not wear the rosiest aspect, it may prove interesting to give an account of the results of the working of one of the West Coast dredges—that of the A. 1. Company. The following list, supplied by the Secretary, Mr W. Eollitt, gives the actual returns since the dredge commenced operations in June of this year, and includes time lost in opening up, which is usually considerable: —
The above results have enabled the Company to pay off all liabilities and leave it with a respectable credit balance, It will also he reassuring to shareholders to learn that during the last few weeks a shaft has been sunk on what was considered the poorest part of the claim and the results were very satisfactory. Reporting under date November 4th, with regard to this shaft, the dredgemaster writes:—
“I sunk a shaft about 150 yards ahead of the dredge on Flower’s Creek side. We got bottom at 14 feet from the surface. When wa started to sink we went through one foot of silt and then six inches of clay which is all stripping. As soon as we struck the wash I could get gold. The wash is heavy and oementy down to within three feet of the bottom,, when we struck a different class of dirt, it being very sandy, with a good few bottom stones, but the gold improved as we sunk into it. I got one shotty piece, but the rest was light, but taking the wash right through it is payable. If the rest of the ground above the shaft is as good there is 30 ounces per week in it for the dredge.” The claim during the last few weeks has been visited by the secretary, and he reports thai the dredge is showing very little sign of wear and tear, and the best confirmation of his report is that the repairs have been practically nil.
