ADISASTROUS FIRE.

A fire this morning destroyed a twostoried building in High Street occupied by Mrs Laing, a boardinghouse keeper; Calder, Crummond and Company, furniture and ironmongery establishment; Hill, hairdresser, and the drapery department of the Dannevirke Co-operative Company. An adjacent building was also gutted. There, were thirty inmates at the boardinghouse. Many had narrow escapes. One man named Harris, well known at Peilding, escaped through the window on to the verandah, from which he fell to the road, being stupefied by the smoke. He received severe injuries and was taken to the hospital Mr and Mrs Schwass and four children had an exciting escape. Mrs Schwass was slightly burnt, while two children received burns while being carried through the flames by their father. There were several other minor injuries. It is considered that the high pressure water supply saved the town, The insurances on Cdder, Drummond and Go's building is £SOO in the Manchester, £SOO in the South British, and stock £I,OOO in the Manchester; Mrs Laing's in the Manchester £IOO and £IOO in the South British. Dannevirke Cooperative Company had £3,800 on stock, which was only partly destroyed. The total losses are above insurances, probably £4,000.
