GREY HOSPITAL BOARD.
The adjourned meeting of the Grey River Hospital Trustees was held last night. Present—Messrs Petrie (chairman), Smith, Sheedy and Kettle. The month's accounts amounting to £166 2s 5d were passed for payment. The number of patients treated in the hospital last month was 64; number admitted 16; discharged 14; remaining in the institution at the end of month 50.
Letter from Borough Council relative to leasing sections near Hospital. The circumstances were explained by the Chairman and Mr Sheedy. It was resolved that the Board regrets the lease but it is not in a position to purchase ground. Letter from Napier Hospital forwarding the following resolution “ The Trustees of the Napier Hospital consider that the time has now arrived when a hospital for the special treatment of cancer cases should be erected in one of the large centres, and the members of the various Hospital Boards in the Colony be requested to co-operate with a view of approaching the Government and requesting that steps may be taken to have such an Institution erected as early as possible.” Eesolved that the Board heartily agree with proposal, and that copy of resolution be forwarded to the lion. Mr Walker and Mr Guinness, M.H.E.
Letter from Mr Russell, of Brunner, asking that hour of meeting be altered till 3 p.m. The Chairman gave notice of motion on the matter for n§xt meeting, The following letter was read from Dr J. W. M'Brearty
“I have much pleasure in stating that on November stb, 1901, at the Grey River Hospital, two candidates, viz., Miss Ada Florence Kilgour and Miss Anastatia O’Donnell, presented themselves for examination in nursing.
“ I gave them a very thorough examination in the following subjects:— “ Anatomy. ' “ Physiology. “ Preparation of room for operation. “ Preparation of instruments for operation. * “ Disinfection of rooms generally. “ Nursing of the different fevers. “Preparation of food and various other branches of nursing. “ I must congratulate the two candidates for the efficient manner in which they went through their examination.
“ The nurses have been assiduous and painstaking in their work, andhave taken every advantage of fhe tuition imparted to them by the Surgeon Superintendent and Matron.”
The Chairman explained that it was agreed in August last that the salaries should be increased as soon as the nurses had qualified; that they were prepared for their examination two months ago, but it was not found convenient to make examination before. Under the circumatances the nurses were entitled to increase from September Ist. Mr Smith moved in that direction, but it was ageed to hold over decision for a fuller meeting.
The Board’s Account was overdrawn £294 19s 9d, and the month’s account amounting to £166 2s 5d would make a total of £461 2s Id. The Building Account was still £9OO behind, but there was a vote on the Estimates which it was expected would be forthcoming. Messrs Smith, Kettle and Sheedy were appointed Visiting Committee for the month,
