THE FEDERAL TARIFF.
[per PRESS ASSOCIATON —COPYRIGHT.] Melbourne, Nov 14.
In the House of Representatives Sir G. Turner announced that after considering the objections raised against certain items in the tariff Government decided on the following alterations, which will come into operation to-morrow: --Cease collecting package duties. Make the duties on chocolate, cocoa, and confectionery 2d, tea in bulk 3d ; in package 4d per pound, the percentage duties on these items being dropped. Fix those on earthenware and glassware at 20 per cent. A further statement will be made on Tuesday in reference to duties on rice, kerosene, cotton and linen goods.
In reference to the proposed changes of tea duties, Sir George Turner did not definitely state that they would come into operation to-morrow, but he intends to ask the House to adopt the alterations, and added that the items, tea, rice, kerosene, cotton and linen goods, which are looked upon as only revenue duties, will receive every consideration. Probably the committee will be asked to allow them to stand over till the rest of the tariff is dealt with. The revenue therefrom will be ascertained, which will bo a guide as to how to deal with the revenue lines mentioned.
