The Northumberland, Durham and Yorkshire coasts are strewn with wreckage, and it is feared that hundreds have been drowned owing to unidentified vessels foundering. The revenue cutter Active was dashed to pieces on Granton breakwater, in the Firth of Forth, and the captain and 20 men drowned.
