The Hull steamer Cato struck the ship Loch Vennacher from Melbourne (August 13) while achored fen miles below Gravesend. The ship sank. The crow was saved. One is critically injured.
The Chinese Indemnity. Shanghai, November 13

Thousands are employed in the chief Chinese arsenals < feverishly manufacturing arms and ammunition. Gale—Wreck—Loss of Life. London, November 13. There has been a great gale over the greater part of the United Kingdom and a phenomenal rainfall in Scotland, Ireland and northern England, inundating whole districts, especially in Yorkshire and Ulster, where railway traffic is dislocated, the water overflowing some of the trains and extinguishing the engine fires.
There have been numerous wrecks, and ten lives were lost.
The coastguards in the teeth of the gale descended the cliffs at South Foreland with 300 ft of a rope ladder to assist a crew in danger.
